Equine Therapy

The interaction with animals, particularly horses, brings people closer to their true nature in a way that is powerful and life changing.  The focus of Equine Therapy is not about horseback riding, horsemanship or horse training.  The therapy begins with the premise that horses are sentient beings with the capacity to develop deep and loving relationships.  The process involves unbiased observation, clear intention and trust in intuition, as well as the wisdom of the horse.  Patients will establish a connection with the horse using their body, mind and spirit.

As with all animals, horses live very much in the moment.  Horses do not dwell on the past or worry about the future.  They do not form opinions or judgments about what they observe.  They do not have a word or label for every experience, sensation or feeling.  Horses help patients focus their attention, improve concentration, maintain self-awareness, trust their intuition and practice consistency.  They can help patients find their “true nature” through interaction.

The horses play an active role in the therapeutic process.  With a multi-sensory, hands-on approach, the patient and the horse become partners.  This enables the patient to grow and become aware of self while dealing with emotional issues and removing the blocks of the past in the way of their future. The natural outdoor setting and interaction with the animal encourages reflection and healing.

Experiential work requires determination, effort and persistence.  In a time when immediate gratification and the “easy way” are the norm, individuals learn what it is to live patience and acceptance.  They will see that anything worthwhile sometimes requires hard work and making difficult choices.  Some will learn to slow down and take time to address unresolved issues, hurts, doubts and fears.

There is a saying that horses come to those in time of need.  Indeed, people come to be with horses at just the right moment in their lives and most would say that they are forever changed by having made that connection with these wise and knowing animals.
