Concurrent Diagnosis

The term concurrent disorder describes a situation where someone has both a substance use problem and a mental health problem at some point in their lifetime. It could be in the present or the past. It can be confusing for you and your loved ones. It is not a rare phenomenon. Some studies indicate that as many as half of those with a drug, alcohol, food, gambling, sexual addiction also have some form of mental illness.

Concurrent disorders come in many forms. They can include anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. Those with mental illness are more susceptible to physical addiction, which can be their vehicle of choice to ease their mental pain.

There is no "quick fix" for concurrent process disorder, when you factor in the added care the patient requires to treat mental illness as well.
